There is a campaign to get allowances for family members caring for children in the absence of their parents. Foster carers receive a substantial amount of money for children in their care, where as grandparents, uncles and aunts receive nothing in most cases. These people are normally keeping their children in a preferential family environment and saving the government substantial funds. Carole and I are guardians to our great nephews since their mother passed away, and although we do get a little funding from Huntingdon Social Services, this only covers 15% of the real costs normally paid for foster-care. (This is not guaranteed, so could loose it at any time.) This comes at a time when we should be reaping the benefits of our early working life, but we could not stand by and allow Kye and Callum to be separated from our family.
